Promoting and organizing community and educational programs and projects with an emphasis on environmentally friendly living. Making a difference, by changing one habit at a time.....join us!

Here are some notes from our August 7 meeting.

Judy Dearden called the meeting to order at the Highland Heights Community Center around 7PM.

She  provided an update on the HHGTF finances, June book report meeting, HH Fun Day, Millridge School  activities, possible work with Mayfield High School, Planet Aid box at Mayfield High School with 11000 pounds collected, freecycle activities with discussion of a possible indoor event in January, September 4 gazebo no waste party, Federal ID number work, December elections, and possible need for a nominating committee. Judy then introduced our speaker Leslie Elia.

Leslie Elia talked about environmental loads on our bodies. A huge thank you goes out to our most interesting speaker.
Here are some notes from our Sept. 4 meeting with the 2nd Annual Gazebo Potluck Dinner.

We reviewed achievements over the past year to include:
- planet aid box
- freecycle/ewaster drive
- use less plastic campaign
- Millridge school garden expansion
- Mayfield green team executive committee
- became incorporated
- received federal tax id number
- began 501c3 application
- sponsored 8 green living speakers series programs
- held green book club meeting and 2 business meetings

These are for our upcoming city newsletter.

Highland Heights Green Task Force
City Newsletter, Fall 2013
We have PUMPKINS!!!  At last count there were 9 pumpkins of all sizes…with the largest being twice the size of a man’s head!  Not only have the pumpkins done nicely, so have the green and red peppers, perennial herbs, scented geraniums, marigolds for an extra punch of color (and to discourage bugs!), green beans and tomatillos. The plan is to have a contest to win the pumpkins for Halloween and to have some volunteer parents help with making some salsa with the tomatillos. Again, a big thank you to all who helped with the garden this year…..perhaps an addition of sunflowers next year????  (Composting will begin again as soon as the compost teams are in place….anyone wanting to volunteer to help monitor this over the school year, please contact Judy Dearden, contact info below. Help is always welcome!)

On Sept. 4th, the Green Task Force hosted another successful “No-Waste” potluck dinner in our beautiful, new city gazebo. We had a great attendance, including Mayor Scott Coleman and a number of members from council!  We also, for the second year, produced NO WASTE! Everyone was instructed to bring their own dishes, utensils, napkins, and drink glasses. I am pretty confident that we are all proud of our “new habit”. There was just one bowl for scraping off food scraps from our plates. Good weather, food and great company! Thank you everyone!

In spite of the weather, many residents stopped by our table and we had the chance to speak with them about our 2013 campaign “USE LESS PLASTIC”, and show them “alternatives” for the many plastic items typically found in most of our homes. The simple most profound solution to reduce plastic consumption is to bring your own bags when you shop at the grocery store, drugstore or mall. HIGHLAND HEIGHTS GREEN TASK FORCE MEMBERSHIP
The HHGTF organization is coming to the end of its third year and is growing….this year our membership has tripled over last year! So many wonderful members! We invite you to join us for a “Green Living Speaker Series” program, fieldtrip, environmental event or a business meeting soon! And please keep in mind, we have no borders. It does not matter where someone lives, as we all have a “shared future” we invite everyone who has an interest in living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle to join us. Feel free to pass our information on to family and friends.
